Within the village, in substance yes. Solvang applies architectural standards drawn from Danish provincial building, and design review holds projects to them: roof form, half-timbering, window pattern and materials are all part of the approval rather than a styling choice. The elevations are the part of the set that will be argued about, so they get drawn properly.

Does that apply outside the village core?

Less strictly, and it varies by where you are. Residential areas away from the commercial core are not held to the same detail as a Copenhagen Drive storefront. Which standard applies to your parcel is worth establishing before the design starts, because the two lead to very different buildings.

Do you work on commercial buildings here?

Yes, mainly tenant improvements and storefront work within the village. Where a project changes how a space is used, the occupancy questions that follow belong with the designer leading it; we produce the documentation and the elevations that review will assess.

How much detail do the elevations need?

Accepted Answer

More than a typical permit set. Where review is judging the building on its appearance, the elevations have to show materials, profiles and proportions clearly enough to be assessed. That is drafting time, and it is worth spending, because a vague elevation is what generates another round.

Can you document an existing village building?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many of the commercial buildings carry detailing that has to be matched or continued, and matching something requires measuring it first. We scan the building, draw the existing elevations accurately, and give the design work something exact to carry forward.
